Yerang Moon

Yerang Moon’s work delves into the complexities of human existence through abstract representations of the body, exploring the tension between form and formlessness. Her focus lies on the fragmentation of the human figure, where limbs, organs, and flesh are disassembled, reconfigured, and integrated into shifting spaces. These bodies dissolve into one another, breaking down into ambiguous shapes and textures, challenging traditional concepts of identity and the body’s fixed boundaries. By deconstructing the body to its most fundamental elements, Yerang Moon aims to create a visual language that transcends physicality and external expectations, allowing the figures to exist in a liberated, undefinable state.

Through layering and manipulating paint, Yerang Moon’s process emphasizes this dissolution and transformation. She builds up layers of vibrant, contrasting colors—rich reds, deep blues, and earthy tones—each evoking different emotional and physical states. These hues represent both the rawness of the human body and the complexity of internal struggles. By sanding and refining these layers, flattened, almost sculptural forms emerge, carrying distinct qualities, from muscle to bone to artificial implants. This use of color and texture reflects the duality of the human experience, where the boundaries between the body, mind, and society are not fixed but constantly shifting, much like the human condition itself. Her work invites viewers to reflect on the fluidity of identity and the interplay between the individual and the collective.

Yerang Moon (b.1999, Seoul, South Korea) is an artist currently based in New York as a Fulbright scholar. Driven by a curiosity about how individuals become collectives, she explores the dynamics of our lives. She makes paintings, high reliefs, and installations to delve into the complex relationship between individuals and society by metaphorically exploring in 2D and 3D, visible and non-visible aspects of humans. Before pursuing her M.F.A at Pratt Institute (expected date of graduation, May 2025), Yerang received a B.A from Seoul National University in 2021. She had a solo show “Solid or Liquid” at Mora Museum in Jersey City in August 2024. Also, she participated in the following selected group shows: “Marks” at A Space Gallery in NY, “Presence/Absence” at One Eyed Studios in NY, “International Exhibition” at Awita New York Studio in NY, “980617-2” at Rainbow Cube Gallery and “X Being X and Not X at the Same Time” at Woosuk Gallery in Korea. She was selected as a resident artist in Cellar Artist Run Residency (Brooklyn, NY) in 2024 and L.a Art Residency program (Patton, PA) in 2025.
