Eva Salmerón
Since 1998 I have been creating interactive public art projects in several cities on three continents since 1998 (as part of the collective Mmmm... until 2021). Places that encourage people to enjoy each other's company, moments and situations that bring people together. Like the Meeting Bowls, first created for Times Square in New York City, large bowl-shaped objects that provided seating for eight people (or “tourist cages in Times Square”, as one newspaper titled them), designed to foster dialogue by bringing those seated inside face to face.
Our work has been covered by major media outlets such as the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, BBC, and The Guardian. I have lectured at international universities and institutions including the National Gallery in Washington DC, Sapienza University in Rome, School of Architecture in Madrid, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar.
I am currently teaming up with Ciro Márquez on a project called Signs of People, ten road signs in the shape of real people pointing out local landmarks. It is the first time we have faced the difficulty of creating a wayfinding project which is also participatory public art that involves the community in an essential way. Supported by the former Catonsville Historical Society, the Citizens of Baltimore County and the Maryland State Arts Council.
